"Influence" from the album "Solace"

Influence

Hi Everyone!

This week I wanted to talk about the music piece "Influence" from the "Solace" album.  This piece originally started out with the title of "Gentleness"  I was trying to portray something angelic, something with a feeling of inspiration that would only come from somewhere beyond my own understanding.  It was particularly a challenge to get the the right amount of energy with the choir to give it the proper touch it deserves and to make the arrangement in a way that would be most uplifting and be the correct amount of "influence'.

More things to think about. In the meantime if you haven't listened to my other albums, feel free to share any of following links below:

Thanks for listening and being wonderful fans,

New Album Releases: Instrumental Composer adds to Ambient Music Collection

Epicworld Cultural Academy interviews Jordan about his music album release of “Variations”.

Jordan is an instrumental music composer who has done a variety of projects in the entertainment business.  He has done sound for more than eighty productions in live theater and has done post production work in film and TV.  He has released music albums “Solace”, Award-Winning “In Motion” and No Limit to the Skies (20th anniversary edition) and is now to release this latest album “Variations”.

This new album “Variations” is not entirely a new album is that right?

Well, it is new to everybody else. Actually it is a mix of both.  A few of them are the original concepts and a few of them are original in title only and were rewritten from the sketchbook idea to make it interesting.  I highlighted the pieces I originally wanted to complete and made them better and more interesting to listen to.  I figure no one really wants to hear my ideas that were only partially there.

Where are you from originally, where did you grow up?

I started in the East and ended in the West.  I was born in Erie Pennsylvania and grew up in the Chicago area went a number of other places went to a tech school in Wisconsin and moved to Utah.  I lived in Texas and Florida somewhere in between there and covered many states along the way living in few different cities in Utah.  I just love the mountains and the scenery.

You won an award for your ”In Motion” album. Tell me about it?

To tell you the truth, it wasn’t the album I expected to win, but it is quite popular, and “Random Fire, from that album, has remained at top of charts at Number One Music, ever since its release in 2014.  It is a very different album from  my popular debut album, “Solace”, which people like for stress relief.  I got a number of fans who really enjoy the (“No Limit to the Skies”) 20th anniversary album, as well, in South America and all over the world.  I am just glad that it came out well and enjoyed by those listening to it.  All I have to say is with this album “Variations” it is a variety of music from soft to a dynamic sound.  I tended to mix it up a little bit to give it hence, a little variety.

What made you decide go back and rewrite this album?

To be honest,  I have been working on this other album and bit off more than I can chew and needed more time to complete it… and by the way I am still working on this other big album project, I just need more time.  Life happens to me as to most of us quite frequently.  It’s been a couple of years and fans are asking me, when is the next album coming?  Then I kept thinking about “Variations” and thought to myself, I have that album just sitting there on the shelf and no one even knows about it, and thought, what a waste.  Let’s see what I have here.

Why is it called “Variations”?

At the time it was just this montage of music I wanted to keep on a sort of digital notebook.  I liked the ideas of the music and didn’t want to just toss it aside.  I also didn’t know when I would have the time to go back and go over these concepts.  Apparently it took close to 18 years to consider.  Hopefully to answer the question, some of the pieces are quite different and dynamic.  For example “Times Past” and “Heavy Steel” are complete opposites.

Is there any new music added?

The original album concluded with a Reprise to “Moving Forward Triumphant” which was a written version for a short film selection I wrote the music for. I felt like the Reprise was redundant and I decided I didn’t need to include it.  So I added “Pulses” to give it a nice conclusion to the album and it is a bit different from the others.  I figured the “Variations” album was a good place for it.

In what way is ‘Pulses’ different?

A lot has changed over the years with new tools in technology; I was trying out some of them with “Pulses”.  The approach with these tools was a little different.  There are several ways to write music or how to do it.  It was a little bit of a learning curve on some of it, but made a lot of new progress and learned some new angles to try.  I think technology is great until it decides to think on its own and leaves you out of it.  There are a lot of great tools now available to use.  Compared to 18 years ago we’ve come a long way.

Has anyone asked you why you write music?

I don’t think anyone has asked me why exactly, it is more like what are you doing this for? There is no future in it.  I would then ask why people become lawyers or pilots or anything.  Some do it for the money; others love what they do.  They are right, the music business is a tough market, being a needle in a haystack.

I do it for many reasons. Many of us would consider it a type of calling to do so, which I believe.  I was probably eight or ten years old when I began having these ideas that have been provoking me to move forward with this. I thought it would be nice to make this music a little more like the great symphonic masters with a little twist.  I also thought I am not a music theologian— I don’t read music that well.  Of course many times I would ask myself; “How am I going to do this?” and hope that people listening will understand or enjoy it and that it would be memorable, that they would replay it often. I study the classic composers a lot, and try to capture the timeless quality that makes their music memorable.

I am grateful for tools and music technology of today to make this possible.  The other reason I do it is because I love doing it.  I like to put music to my thoughts or different ideas and get you to think, or put people in their own understanding of where they see themselves when listening to them.

You mentioned this next big album, do you have any idea on your time frame?

It still may be a while, but it is indeed coming.  It has been quite the undertaking.  There are a number of pieces and elements to it.  It is definitely thought provoking and hopefully in a good way.  I call it the big album because there may be a lot of music pieces to it, possibly being 2 CDs and that it does have a big full rich sound to it.  I have a couple of ideas for a couple of other albums that may come first.

"Spring Flow' from the album "Solace"

Spring Flow

Hi Everyone!

This week I wanted to talk about the music piece "Spring Flow" from the "Solace" album. Have you ever gone out for a walk through the forest or a nice pathway with lovely scenery with something captivating? There are a number of things that would make one feel uplifted by the feel of a natural location.  With water bubbling and flowing from a spring down the hill to the lake below.  There are great sounds in nature, but nothing like a 'Spring Flow'.

"Fighter Tactics" from the album "In Motion"

Fighter Tactics

Hi Everyone!

This week I wanted to talk about the music piece "Fighter Tactics" from the "In Motion" album. This piece was originally written for a air combat (VG) game. This is the extended version to complete the piece.  The other was written for the scene of the game.  This is something I have always imagined being around airplanes in my growing up years.  Who hasn't thought of moments being in a fighter plane or jet plane with some action music to it.  Military pilots do a lot of preflight and check their 'Fighter Tactics' to be sure the mission is a success.

"The Chase" from the album "In Motion"

The Chase

Hi Everyone!

This week I wanted to talk about the music piece "The Chase" from the "In Motion" album. Ever felt like you were in a movie running from something or had some urgent reason for leaving the situation in a hurry?  I am sure many of you might have liked some music to accompany the thought.  I felt like this was something I wanted to compose for such an occasion.  I think that there are a number of examples of doing this.  I originally had this idea back in my early years of composing and found a segment of it that grow into what it has become.  Next time you feel like your day is getting to you or you are needing to escape, I would just cut to "The Chase".

"Solace" from the album "Solace"

Solace

Hi Everyone!

This week I wanted to talk about the music piece "Solace" from the "Solace" album. This is the highlighted piece of the 'Solace' album.  Many of the life of the great composers like Mozart, Beethoven and many others I can relate to.  I started composing this around 2009 having to go through more hardships and challenges of life.  It seems to have become a reason to compose this piece for those times.  I believe that this was to also help inspire and help those with similar hardships in their life.  I hope this brings a little bit of hope and 'Solace' in these trying times to all those who need it.

"Momentum" from the album "In Motion"

Momentum

    Hi Everyone!

This week I wanted to talk about the music piece "Momentum" from the "In Motion" album.  This is a longer piece than some of the other pieces.  It builds from beginning to the end.  It took a better part of a year to complete.  It was originally named "intensity".  At this point I wanted make it more of an energy builder and a great finale to the entire "In Motion" album.  The beginning initiates with a low bass line and the choir to bring you a calm intro, then building with the orchestra and a variety of supporting effects and number of percussion instruments.  The piano made a great start for this piece.  I had reached a point where it was more of a challenge to finish.  It was a challenge to stop the  "Momentum" once I got going.  The piano gave a great start and a satisfying conclusion.    I really hope to keep up the  "Momentum".

"Impression" from the album "Solace"

Impression

Hi Everyone!

This week I wanted to talk about the music piece "Impression" from the "Solace" album.  This piece actually started with a Spanish Guitar taking a more basic feel with a strum effect.  That gave me the idea to the other sound I was looking for.  I really wanted to compose something that had a heavy rich Brass section in it.  Using a number of Trombones, French Horns and adding a large String section to give it a bit of an edge with the Pizzicato String section.  To make something thought provoking is quite a challenge especially for this piece, but it allowed me to try some new approaches.  The Trumpet made the right addition and a lasting "Impression".

More things to think about. In the meantime if you haven't listened to my other albums, feel free to share any of following links below:

"Run Free Anthem" from the album "In Motion"

Run Free Anthem

Hi Everyone!

This week I wanted to talk about the music piece "Run Free Anthem" from the "In Motion" album. I have always wanted to compose an anthem.  I enjoy the Hymn from Hans Zimmer's movie soundtrack "Crimson Tide" and also listening to themes by Vangelis like "Chariots of Fire" or his Official "Anthem" album to the 2002 FIFA World Cup.  These were some of the inspirational pieces that were the motivation with "Run Free Anthem".  There were many instrumental parts to incorporate, such as the violin solo with a little Celtic touch to it.  With all the other orchestrations and choir, it was a challenge that took a few years off and on to refine.  In 2011 a shorter version was used in a book trailer published through Amazon.

"Music Box" from the album "Solace"

Music Box

Hi Everyone!

This week I wanted to talk about the music piece "Music Box" from the "Solace" album. When I composed this piece I wanted to imitate a music box that would transition the listener into a orchestral world. I would imagine a music box giving you a small part of an orchestra. As you listen to the music it would essentially draw you into the orchestra as a whole like you were there. Then of course when the music comes to an end, it brings you back to the simple melody in the little box. There are many ways to do this of course. This was one of those ways in which it was done.

"In Motion" from the album "In Motion"

In Motion

Hi Everyone!

This week I wanted to talk about the music "In Motion" from the "In Motion" album.  This came from a piece of music that I did as a school project in college.  This is the same theme and melody arranged from an original version I started on another album ("Variations") that is currently not released.  It may be released at some point.  It is shorter in comparison to this current version.  I felt like it needed more than was written and added this to the "In Motion" album.  There were a number of new techniques to learn at the time.  Learning about orchestrations and various instruments.  I wanted something that would get you moving.  When going over titles for the "In Motion" album, this piece seemed be the most fitting.

"Rain Drops" from the album "Solace"

Rain Drops

Hi Everyone!

This week I wanted to talk about the music "Rain Drops" from the "Solace" album. It is that time of year when the season struggles between Winter and Spring. It either rains or snows. I've always wanted to write a piece that had to do with the rain or snow of the season. With 'Rain Drops' it just seemed to add the right touch. Taking a few instruments and defining them to a setting such as the Harp and with other instruments from the orchestra making it a good collaboration of music unity. It is nice to have four seasons to give variety. It is one of the those pieces that allows you to look out the window, sit and watch on the front or back patio and listen to the how the 'Rain Drops'.

"Obstacles" from the album "In Motion"

Obstacles

Hi Everyone!

This week I wanted to talk about the music "Obstacles" from the "In Motion" album. This piece of music was quite the challenge, hence the title "Obstacles". I started working on it back in 2003 during some rough times in my life. I felt it was appropriate for the challenges I was facing at the time. As you listen to the piece, it starts a bit busy and energetic. The piano being the instrument of focus as the one going through the barrage of situations that we all experience. The other instruments represent that opposition to our progress. It then builds to a barricade of instruments (Like the story of 'Peter and the Wolf') to break through, and finally concludes with a calm "Ahh made it" moment. And yet there are "Obstacles" to come.

"Just for You" from the album "Solace"

Just for You

Hi Everyone!

This week I wanted to talk about the music "Just for You" from the "Solace" album. This was a piece I wrote that would describe two people basically apart from the other. There are a couple of instruments with the piano and the violin that start playing together with the violin off in the distance and by the time the piece concludes they end up together. If you have ever had relationship you longed for, then this piece is "Just for You".

"Close Surveillance" from the album "In Motion"

Close Surveillance

Hi Everyone!

This week I wanted to talk about the music "Close Surveillance" from the "In Motion" album. Working on this piece was a bit of a challenge. I originally wrote this piece for air combat game (VG) many years ago. The original segment is on the 20th anniversary edition (single). I wrote it for a short animation sequence at the time, it was to lead into the "Sneak Attack" segment. It was unfinished and really just wanted to finish what I started. By adding more of the orchestra, it allowed me to expand more of a full sound. To give it a little more of the feel for what it was intended. I added radio communications (one voice happens to be mine) to the music. I also had recorded "Close Surveillance" without voices for use with other purposes.

This was a favorite with Akademia who awarded Best Ambient/Instrumental to the "In Motion" album. It is enjoyed by those who appreciate the drama of the battle front.

"My Dear" from the album "Solace"

My Dear

Hi Everyone!

Today I wanted to talk about the music "My Dear" from the "Solace" album. It is a music piece that is simple and a little profound. I started composing this in 2003 after going through a rough time in my life. It is a bit on the short and sweet side. The music piece became one of the starting points of the "Solace" album. "My Dear" allows a simple beginning to the "Solace" album while listening, the album increases its scale with richer instrumentation going down the list of names of the pieces until you reach the restful end.. My hope was to also allow the listener to feel as if they could make a connection somehow, feeling more relaxed or would consider a precious moment or a delight.

"New Sound of Victory" from the album "In Motion"

New Sound of Victory

Hi Everyone!

Today I wanted to write about "New Sound of Victory" from the "In Motion" album. I originally wrote this piece for (VG) an air combat simulator game which is now on my 20th anniversary single album. It was intended for the game and was only a segment for a scene which was cut. It was shorter than I would have liked it to be. I struggled with this piece in giving it the interest it deserves. I finished it with a few additions and put it on the "In Motion" album. In a way it was a "New Sound of Victory".
