"Mercury" from the album "The Universe"

Mercury

Hi Everyone,

This week I wanted to talk about ‘Mercury’ and what to look forward to with the music pieces on the upcoming album “The Universe”.

Today I wanted to talk briefly about “Mercury” from the upcoming album “The Universe”.  Mercury is named after the swift Roman messenger god and is the closest planet to the sun, being about 36 million miles. That doesn’t necessarily mean it is the hottest planet.  I will cover that later.  It is about 3,000 miles in diameter and is 48 million miles from the earth.  It is pretty colorless and has no known moons and no atmosphere.  It can be seen from the in the twilight hours with the naked eye, and is the smallest main planet in our solar system.

The gravity on mercury is so weak that if you weighed 150 pounds on earth you would weigh only 57 pounds on mercury.  It is not an active planet and is considered a dead planet.  It has an iron core which makes up about 60 percent of the planets mass, making it the densest of all the planets.  It does however have a strange calendar, its year is about 88 earth days making it the fastest of any planet to orbit the sun.  A day on mercury however is much longer being the slowest at about 176 earth days.  This makes the day longer than its year on the planet.

Having this elliptical rotation makes the planet temperatures vary in extreme conditions.  If you were standing on the surface it would appear three times as big in the sky as we see on earth and 7 times hotter.  Because of its elliptical or oval shaped orbit the sun appears to shrink in the sky, giving it a double sunrise. On the sun side it is 810 degrees Fahrenheit, on the other side it is 300 degrees below zero.

Do to the slow rotation it has a long time to heat up and cool down.  There is even ice at the poles that never see the sun.  Because there is no atmosphere it is always a starry night and without the atmosphere to guard it from meteors and objects making it the most heavily cratered planet in the solar system. During the Voyager missions they were able to pick up the local sounds of the planets and surrounding satellite moons.
This is because of the surrounding magnetic field.  Mercury has a growl sound like a monster or dragon.
I wrote this as a moving motion piece as the planet mercury moves around the sun.  I am starting the music on the album making it more active and busy from the sun as we move out of the solar system becoming less intense or active, using various instruments and unique sounds.

More things to think about.  In the meantime if you haven't listened to my other albums, feel free to share any of following links below:
