"Spring Flow" from the album "No Limit to the Skies"

Spring Flow

Hi Everyone!

This week I wanted to talk about the music piece "Spring Flow" from the "No Limit to the Skies" album.  Now you may be wondering why would a soft tone piece be doing on an high paced album like this.  When I was working on the air combat video (VG) game.  I was trying a number of ways of expressing emotion.  I was doing a number of projects and trying new things.  This of course came together into a nice piece, which I wanted to save for another day.  It was appropriate for the setting it was written for.  It became another part of a sketchbook of ideas that I wanted to keep on a collection during that time.  Some of the digital technology was new at the time, allowing digital recordings.  There was a lot trial and error, but a great learning experience.  You may notice I tend to use the music titles for a description to the music.  This piece was written in the earlier part of the year and just flowed together like a brook or stream, hence the name "Spring Flow".

"Moving Forward Triumphant" from the album "Variations"

Moving Forward Triumphant

Hi Everyone!

This week I wanted to talk about the music piece "Moving Forward Triumphant" from the "Variations" album.  There was a project in school I did which was to put music to film.  It was a patriotic film with a patriotic theme.  I composed it as a theme for this movie.  I played along with the movie with trying different scenes to get a feel for it.  The film project was only for about 10 minutes to get the credit.  My instructor at the time said the music fit the scenario very well and wanted to use my project for other students as an example of how to get the feel of the music to fit the film.  I was glad it came out well.  The original film version was mostly played with a heavy brass section in it.  At the same time while doing this project, I wrote a second version that had more piano and strings that eventually went into the sketchbook of ideas.  The film originally used the version that had more of the brass and drum section, while the other version had more piano and string sections in it.  The brass section fit the film.  The piano version by itself was more pleasing to listen to without having the driving brass section.  In contrast to these I decided not to put both versions on the album.  To me this would have been too redundant.  Instead  I re-wrote it in a way combining the two pieces for the "Variations" album.  The project went well and was a good experience having yet another angle of writing for picture or film.
