"Saturn" from the album "The Universe"

Hi Everyone,

This week I wanted to talk about ‘Saturn’ and what to look forward to with the music pieces on the upcoming album “The Universe”.

Saturn is named after the god Saturnus, the god of agriculture and harvest.  Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second largest is the most photogenic planet in the solar system.  It is about 890 million miles from the Sun and takes about 29 years to make one orbit.  It is made up of 75 percent Hydrogen and 25 percent Helium.  It is about 74,900 miles in diameter and can fit about 765 Earths.  Unlike Jupiter it is so buoyant if there were enough water it would float.  Like Jupiter it has no solid surface.  We do not really know the rotation of a day, the cloud tops rotate about 11 hours.  There are 8 rings and are lettered from A-G and span from tip to tip about 200,000 miles across and are very thin about as thick as a 1 or 2 story building and like looking at a sheet of paper in comparison.

There are at least 62 moons, Titan being its largest moon is bigger than Mercury and Pluto.  The Cassini/Huygens spacecraft took 7 years to reach Saturn.  The Huygens probe was sent to Titan and discovered it has an atmosphere and solid ground similar to Earth.  With Saturn’s other unique moons like Enceladus being only 300 miles across water and water ice geyser vapors shooting out from its surface forming the E ring.  Others like Mimas which looks like a familiar Death Star, Iapetus and many others with their shapes and sizes.

This piece was written for its serene and beautiful settings.  Saturn being the second biggest planet, I wanted to allow a more majestic and richer quality with lower orchestral and other various instruments without competing with Jupiter which is without comparison.
