"The Universe" from the album "The Universe"

The Universe

This week I wanted to talk about ‘The Universe’ and what to look forward to with the music pieces on the album “The Universe”.

How can you describe the infinite?  As much as we would like to think that we have a grip of how to finite the universe is, it is a place that has no end.  The Greek meaning of ‘universe’ from philosophers like Pythagoras being defined as ‘the all’ or ‘all things’ also known as ‘the worlds’ ‘the cosmos’.  This image is the Hubble Deep Field image taken in 1995 which displays over a 10 day period during the Christmas time period of 342 exposures of what astronomers thought was an empty spot in the sky found over 3,000 galaxies.

There are countless planets and worlds without number that are waiting to be discovered and endless possibilities of life that exist here such as physics and Dark Matter many things unknown.  As an example, the launch of the Voyager spacecraft programs launched in the 70’s they have been traveling ever since and are now well beyond our solar system and will travel at roughly a million miles per day forever.  I wanted to conclude this series of articles by saying that possibilities are endless to be discovered from our endless universe.

When composing this final chapter to this album.  I wanted to describe a vastness with a large majestic orchestra of instruments that describes the endless and continues to astonish and intrigue us as we continue to explore and take this glimpse of the infinite into what we know as the universe.

"Stars" from the album "The Universe"

Stars

As we step out into our backyard and look up at those tiny countless shining dots in the night’s sky not realizing those dots can be even bigger than our sun or even our solar system.  Stars vary at different sizes even our sun is considered small star and one of the cooler stars.  There are different types of stars that very from hot and cool stars.  There is anything from white dwarf to super massive stars. As you can see the small dot (in the photo) is the size of our sun compared to the biggest recorded star which is VY Canis Majoris located about 5,000 light years from the Earth.  If you had to describe the size of the sun it would be a pin head to the star as roughly the size of a massive 10 foot boulder.  There are countless possibilities we only know of a few of them that can be listed in our vast universe.

This piece was some music I had on the shelf for many years.  This was a piece I wanted to add this to the album.  It was a simple piece that describes the simplicity as we see them with a hint of the vastness that stars actually portray.

"Nebula" from the album "The Universe"

Nebula

What is a Nebula?  Is the Greek word for cloud and is an interstellar word for dust and gas.  They come in many different forms and shapes like the clouds in the sky.  Such as animals, insects, flowers and many countless other shapes and sizes.  There are four types of Nebula.  The first are stellar regions star forming clusters called nurseries.  These are huge hydrogen gas areas that gravity pulls together clumps of more material making grow hotter and hotter until it becomes a star.  Whatever is left over may become planets circling the star.  The Orion Nebula which is 15 light years across and is one of the most popular Nebulae in the sky.  It is the most active Nebula form in our galaxy.  This Nebula is in the process of making new stars.  The glow is from 4 stars called trapezium which are thousands of times brighter than our sun.

Many Nebulae are not visible to the naked eye and nearly invisible.  They can be seen with modern technology.  Although it can be seen by the from your backyard it still tends to be a blur and only a glow in Orion’s sword.  Second are called planetary nebula which not planet nebula's are caused by slow dying stars.  Some of these gas clouds can get up 36,000 degrees which is 3 times hotter than our sun.  The third kind of Nebula is called Supernova remnants.  This is a star the dies quickly with a bang and whatever is left afterwards form a Nebula for example the Crab Nebula.  The fourth nebulae are called Dark Nebulae.  The only way these Nebula's are seen are due to the bright stars behind them.

When composing this piece, I wanted to describe it as a large massive cloud.  Being such an overwhelming size of different colors and shapes this allowed me to become more fluid with its sound and environment.  The music is a bit more transparent and with a hint of a cosmic effect.  I would imagine this being a slow moving piece of music to allow this listener to feel like they are traveling through a cloud.

"Quasar" from the album "The Universe"

Quasar

What is a Quasar?  They are a super massive black hole.  It is a super solar system sized galaxy with high points of energy that are contained inside them.  They were discovered by radio telescopes that found what they call blobs called an occultation.  Which means it is an object that is hidden by another object and passes between the observers.  This was the brightest of the blobs that were discovered called Object Number 273 in the Brand New 3rd Cambridge Radio Catalog or 3C273 for short.  When driving gas into the galactic core.  A way this happens is when two galaxies merge and grow.

The gases descend into the gravitational well and increase in speed and swept up into a massive whirlpool around the well of the black hole which is called an Accretion Disk where the energy of motion is turned into heat.  The heat of the disks glow so bright, that we can see Quasars at great distances.  Some of the gases are swallowed causing the black hole to grow.  This energy can be pooled in the center causing the energy to shoot out from the poles of the Quasar.  Of course this can become more technical and scientific.  Which if you are interested in more there is much more on these theories.

When composing this piece, I wanted to display a sense of mass and cosmic power because of the size and complexity of this huge phenomenon.  To give it structure of moving a huge spinning mass in a cosmic and majestic way.

"Pluto" from the album "The Universe"

Pluto

Pluto is the Roman god of the underworld.  This is currently the 9th and the farthest planet in our solar system.   There is also a possible chance of a 10th planet that may be even further out known as planet X or Eris.  Pluto from the Sun It is about 3.7 Billion miles and takes about 248 years to make one complete orbit.

During this time it has yet to make a complete orbit since its discovery on February 18th 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh.  A day is a bit longer than ours about 6 Earth days.  The size is about half the width of the United States.  Charon is the largest of Pluto’s 5 moons others are Styx, Nix Kerberos, and Hydra.  The orbit of Charon and Pluto are locked together and if you had a bridge you could walk across it.  They both orbit around a point in space.  This would give it a unique orbit to each other.  It would take you about 9 years to reach Pluto, which on July 14 2015 the New Horizons spacecraft arrives to Pluto.  It discovers more and more qualifications of a planet.  It even has a slight atmosphere of 20 haze layers and has a quarter of the amount of Earth’s pressure.

Approaching the planet it has a red or pinkish tinge to it with a white heart shape about the size of Texas on its surface called Sputnik Planitia.  The temperature on Pluto is -369 degree Fahrenheit.  This would mean if your arm were exposed at all, it would shatter like glass.  There are colors a type of creamy brown in the snow which may be dirt mixed in it.  There are three type of ice such as nitrogen, carbon monoxide and methane.  Also Cryovolcanoes were discovered and may be part of the cause of Pluto’s surface.  Pluto is the only planet in the solar system other than Earth with Penitente, which look like jagged ice formations that are shaped like sharp teeth.  On Earth they are found in the Atacama Desert, but on Pluto they are much bigger and may be the size of mountains compared to the Earth.

When composing this piece, being the furthest planet in our solar system, I wanted to give it a distant and cosmic sound while at the same time wanting to maintain the mythology of the underworld.  Since its discovery with more and more being learned about it, I still wanted to portray and keep a small and yet mysteriousness about it.

"Neptune" from the album "The Universe"

Neptune

Neptune is the Roman god of the sea and the smallest and the furthest gas giant in our solar system.  It is 2.8 billion miles from the Sun.  If you ever wanted to go out for a visit it would take about 12 years to get there.  It takes about 165 Earth years to go around the Sun once.  One day is about 16 Earth hours.  It is made up of 80 percent Hydrogen and 19 percent Helium like Uranus but has a little bit of methane.  It is bluer in color due to the methane and another mysterious chemistry. Some of the winds are some of the fastest in the solar system at speeds of 1,342 miles per hour.

There are a number of storms and visible clouds that come and go.  Like Jupiter’s big red spot there is a large dark spot big enough for the Earth to go through.  This was actually a hole in the atmosphere that tends to come and go and no one knows exactly why.  The axis is 28 degrees giving it about four seasons similar to Earth and Mars, but each season is 40 years long.  In 1989 a number of the pictures were received from the Voyager 2 spacecraft it passed by and it took the spacecraft 13 years to reach Neptune from its launch.  And we haven’t been that close since to Neptune since.  Even though Neptune is the furthest out from the Sun Uranus is the coldest of the gas giants.  Neptune generates more heat internally.

Neptune has 5 faint rings named after those who discovered and researched Neptune.  Neptune has 14 known moons all named after water deity’s in Greek mythology, Triton being the biggest of the moons of Neptune and even bigger than Pluto.  Triton also contains all the masses of all of Neptune’s moons put together and even a slight atmosphere.  It also rotates in retrograde to some of its other moons.  There are geysers that shoot about 10 miles into the atmosphere and then bend about 90 degrees.   Some of the outer moons may have been captured moons.  These moons take about 25 years to orbit Neptune only one time.

When composing this piece, I wanted something calm distant and the water theme of the god of Neptune and the sea; even though it has some of the highest winds in our solar system.  It was intended to be in an oceanic scenario.  If you listen to real sound from the Voyager missions, it sounds like the sea or a wind that howls and whistles as if there was a ship out to sea coming into the harbor.  I would imagine it would go hand in hand if the sound of the planet met the music.

"Uranus" from the album "The Universe"

This week I wanted to talk about ‘Uranus’ and what to look forward to with the music pieces on the upcoming album “The Universe”.

Uranus is the seventh planet and takes 84 years to orbit the Sun. Other planets are named after Roman gods; this is the only planet in our solar system named after a Greek god Ouranos (pronounced [oh-ron-nos]).  Today it is used in the Latin version Uranus (properly pronounced [oo-ron-us]).  If they kept the original Greek way there would be less embarrassment or confusion on how it is pronounced.
This planet is known as the god of the sky or primal god of the Heavens.  Based on its sky discovery, the methane in the atmosphere may be what causes the planets bluish green color.  It has enough pressure on the carbon from the methane particles making it into diamonds raining through the mantle like hailstones.

Uranus is the about 1.6 billion miles from the Sun would make it one of the coldest planets at -355 degrees Fahrenheit in our solar system.  Being made up mostly of gas hydrogen and helium, it is the third largest planet and is also known as one of the gas giants.  Unlike Saturn which has thick visible rings Uranus has 13 thin rings.  It has 27 known moons listed in 3 categories.  Named after English literature, there are 13 inner moons, 5 major moons and the 9 irregular moons.  Uranus is the only planet that rotates on its side at 98 degrees resembling a target or bullseye, which means the poles get 42 years of light and 42 years of darkness.  The planets rotation of one day is 17 hours and 14 minutes.

Being a gas planet some of its cloud surfaces rotate differently because of the high winds some areas may rotate faster around 14 hours.  Even though the poles get more sunlight, it is still hotter at the equator, no one is sure why.  Its core is surrounded by water ammonia and methane at temperatures 4,200 degrees Fahrenheit.

With its rotation it has an unusual magnetosphere is about as strong as the earths, and has an unusual axis of being off 59 degree making it stronger on its north pole than its south pole.  This may be caused by its liquid diamond ocean to cause a deflection of its magnetic sphere it may be caused by it water mantle instead.

This piece was written for its simple yet melodic settings.  Uranus with its sub-zero climate and diamond rains in its atmosphere.  Being so distant and one of the quieter lesser known busy planets in our solar system.  I wanted this music piece to have a sophistication and elegance to it.  I wanted to give it more of a simple quality that would be taken in a richer form for its cloudy majestic sky.
